Discover Moments of Kalmfulness: Our New Virtual Gallery

At Kalms, we understand how overwhelming life can feel sometimes. Recent research we conducted found that nearly half of UK adults (42%) struggle to find moments of calm amidst the chaos of daily life. Even more striking, four in five (79%) of us have experienced anxiety at least once this year, and 43% face financial worries on a weekly basis.

Hearing this, we knew we had to do something. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce the Moments of Kalmfulness virtual gallery – a special online space designed to bring a sense of peace to anyone who visits. This gallery is a celebration of calm through photography, created in collaboration with mental health ambassadors and talented photographers who share our passion for promoting emotional well-being.

Why Photography?

Our research revealed that 52% of people feel calmer and more relaxed after looking at peaceful imagery. And it’s not just anecdotal – studies have shown that simply viewing pictures of nature can have a calming effect and help reduce stress. This could promote mindfulness.

We wanted to harness this power by curating a collection of images that can help transport you to a calmer place, even if only for a moment.

Behind the Lens

We’re thrilled to have worked with some incredible photographers who bring their own unique perspectives to the gallery. Each photographer’s unique perspective contributes to the gallery’s overarching theme of ‘kalmfulness’ – the state of being calm and peaceful – by showcasing the beauty that can be found in small, everyday moments.

The collection includes dramatic scenes of stormy seas, a quiet morning on the River Thames and the sunset at Brighton seafront, formerly named the most kalmful city in the UK.

What You'll Find in the Gallery

The Moments of Kalmfulness virtual gallery is full of breathtaking photographs, each carefully selected to evoke a sense of peace and balance. Whether it’s the stillness of a woodland path, the gentle lapping of waves on the shore, or the warmth of a cosy corner at home, these images invite you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the present moment.

We hope the gallery becomes a sanctuary for you – a place to escape the noise and find a little piece of calm, wherever you are.

Sometimes it can be so easy for us to take our mental health and emotional well-being for granted; to prioritise other things; to put it off until next week. It can also seem too big and too hard. But it’s not.

We, as a nation, can all benefit from cultivating a little more kalmfulness into our lives; to reflect on how we are feeling and understand what we can do to better look after ourselves today and in the future.

You're not alone

You are not alone if you think you could benefit from cultivating a little more kalmfulness into your life.

Only a small minority of Brits (19%) believe their mental health and well-being has improved since the COVID-19 pandemic. 3

What is kalmfulness?

We define kalmfulness as the state or quality of being calm, peaceful and untroubled in the midst of daily life. We believe it’s an emotional state achieved by bringing ease to the mind and body through a range of practices such as releasing your inner creativity, being kind to yourself and others, or implementing the use of traditional herbal remedies. It's whatever helps you to feel grounded and more balanced.

How to achieve kalmfulness

Some self-help techniques can feel unattainable and time consuming; however, cultivating kalmfulness through the practices below can be an achievable goal on a day-to-day basis:

Adopting a mindset of gratitude - Research shows that journaling for five minutes a day about what we are grateful for can enhance our long-term happiness by over 10%.4

Releasing your inner creativity - Just 20 minutes of colouring can minimise anxiety-related symptoms and combat negative mood.8

Being kind to yourself and others - Studies suggest that giving, receiving and even witnessing acts of kindness can release feel-good hormones.5 Just five acts of kindness a month can increase happiness.6

Establishing a self-care routine - Even small acts of self-care in daily life can have a big impact on our wellbeing. For example, improving your sleep quality is as beneficial to health and happiness as winning the lottery may be.9

Paying attention to the present - Just 40 days' mindfulness meditation can help reduce depression symptoms and anxiety.7
